Click Picture for Larger View27-1-14 Original

Subject: Lincoln and Clara Barton

Description: Lincoln issued an undated note. "To the friends of missing persons: Miss Clara Barton has kindly offered to search for the missing Prisoners of War. Please address her at Annapolis, giving her Name, Regiment, and Company of any missing prisoner. A. Lincoln"
From the collected works.

This ink and wash was commissioned by Phil Wagner for his son, Dan, who received an award at the National Red Cross Convention in Dallas, Texas in 1989. A positive was made and framed for his son to present to the National Red Cross.

Ostendorf drew Clara Barton into the picture with Lincoln showing a desk where he could have penned the note. There is no presently known evidence that Clara Barton personally received the note from Lincoln.
