Representative Lincoln traveling by stage coach
Description:
Representative Lincoln getting on the stage coach to travel over
the Post Road through Athens, Illinois to Springfield, Illinois,
on to State Capitol at Vandalia, Illinois. This transportation was
described as a 'coach & four'. Researched by Dr. Wayne Temple.
This ink
and wash was used as the 'logo' and theme picture for prints and
publicizing the Bicentennial event, Marking the Lincoln Post Road
from New Salem to Springfield. A mile marker and road sign with
this 'logo' on it was placed every mile from New Salem to Springfield,
and from Springfield to New Salem. A 22-mile parade was held on
February 12, 1976 from New Salem to Springfield. According to the
D.A.T.O., this celebration was one of the top 10 BiCentennial events
in the nation.
This picture was
used as the cachet on envelopes which were specially postmarked
(1st day cancellation) on February 12, 1976.
