Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln are returning home from church,
Sunday, December 9, 1860. Willie and Tad run on ahead. Older son,
Robert, was away at Harvard.
Description:
Phil Wagner commissioned Ostendorf to draw this ink and
wash for the promotion of the re-opening of Lincoln's Home in June
1988.
The U.S.
Postal Service made a special cancellation that day, with a line
drawing of this picture, which is owned by Phil Wagner.
The ink
and wash was used for the front cover of the Special Edition of
the book, Abraham Lincoln, The Boy ~ The Man. This book was the
gift given to all the dignitaries. Six leather-bound books were
given to the various top officials in the Federal government. (President
Ronald Reagan, Mrs. Reagan, Secretary of the Interior, Head of the
National Park Services and Superintendent of Lincoln's Home) Ostendorf
numbered and signed several copies for the Eastern National Book
Store to sell.
The ink
and wash was used for a special cachet for an envelope used for
the re-opening of Lincoln's Home, along with the special cancellation.
These have become a collectors item...the envelopes and the numbered
& signed books.
